Maths – Secondary (Y-8,Y-9,Y-10)

NOTE: SPECTRUM MENTAL MATHS PROGRAMME STARTS DURING TERM 3 OF ACADEMIC YEAR 2021

What is meant by Mental  Maths?

Mental maths refers to the ability to use specific simple concepts and tips s taught in class to make students reasonably complex and tailor this knowledge to solve abstract application intensive problems by thinking laterally.

This is uniquely designed to provide exposure to mental mathematics to better equip students for success in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in Year-10, 11 and 12 followed by university.

What is unique?

Each week the session deliverables include:

 – Selected topic with concept presentation;

 – Practicing problems in class with Tutor guidance;

 – Unique fast mental mathematical skill to prepare students to perform fast; calculations        without use of calculators.

 – Homework assignments.

 – Mock exam at the end of Term-4 followed by answers discussion

This will allow students to compete in elite maths competitions like:

 – Yearly Australian Maths Competition (calculator free),

 – Year-11 ATAR examinations (non-calculator component)

 – Year-12 ATAR examinations (non-calculator component)

 – Other STEM Subjects in Y-10,11,12

 – University

How is it different from what they learn at school?

The schools do not currently teach these techniques. It is left for the individual students and parents interest to develop these mental maths skills at home. Our session ensures the student understands not only the fast-mental maths skills but also the associated mathematical concepts thoroughly.

A reinforcing last part of the session is facilitated as part of class work practice and homework practice.

How many sessions and duration of each session?

There are four sessions in Term-3 and ten sessions in Term-4.

Each session is of one-hour duration.

What topics are covered in each week?

The topics are listed below to expose the young minds to the available tricks from ancient maths gurus distilled wisdom presented as 16 principles and the associated corollaries.

Details are in Table below.

How is it different from what they learn at school?

The school teaches the basic concepts. We go beyond.

For example, the week-4 topic  for Year-9 is ‘Non-linear relationships’.

The school syllabus normally covers different types of functional relationships and basic formulas.

Our session ensures the student understands different functions thoroughly. This includes being able to recognise a function from a table of values, being able to graph functions and understand their specific features.

A reinforcing last part of the session is included as an extension activity to help develop the student’s mental maths skills.

How many sessions and duration of each session?

There are four sessions in Term-3 and ten sessions in Term-4.

Each session is of one-hour duration.

What topics are covered in each week?

The topics are chosen to expose the young minds to the various advanced concepts in Mathematics.

Details are in Table below.

Note: This course is not a substitute for Year-9 mathematics  (ATAR) subject. It complements it well. The schedule is subject to change to accommodate student’s needs.
